Stornoway Harbour

Stornoway is the main town, and administration centre, on the Isle of Lewis and the Outer Hebrides/Western Isles of Scotland. At one time Stornoway was one of the busiest herring ports in Europe and although the town is still dominated by it's harbour there is only a small fishing fleet operating today. When, at the beginning of the Twentieth Century, the herring trade fell in to a sharp decline the town struggled for a while. Modern industries have replaced the traditional and Stornoway has a growing tourism industry with the number of people visiting increasing each year.

The Standing Stones at Calanais on the Isle of LewisStornoway is an excellent base for a Hebridean vacation. The town is the only real town in the Outer Hebrides/Western Isles and as such it has all of the amenities and facilities you would expect to find in a modern town including an increasing number of tourist attractions. Over on the other side of Stornoway Harbour (shown above) is Lews Castle and the incredible castle grounds. If you choose to take a vacation in Stornoway it is well worth taking at least one walk in the heavily wooded grounds..

Getting to Stornoway is relatively easy with two basic choices, by CalMac ferry or by air into Stornoway Airport. There are a number of places to stay and we have a selection of accommodation available with listings for Stornoway guest house accommodation and Stornoway Hotel accommodation. We have also included details of other accommdation on the Isle of Lewis and in the Hebrides.
